Tenets for an Interlingual Representation Definite NPs
نویسنده
چکیده
In the first part of this paper I draw a typology of definiteness; later I reflect on the definiteness of NPs in an IL-representation. The major result is given by the determiner generators. Definiteness should be evaluated in a Q-A system and in MT. The extensive functionality of definiteness is first elaborated in the parsing and results in an ILrepresentation; finally the determiner generators create correct morphological determiners and right determiner structures.

Translating near-synonyms: Possibilities and preferences in the interlingua
This paper argues that an interlingual representation must explicitly represent some parts of the meaning of a situation as possibilities (or preferences), not as necessary or definite components of meaning (or constraints). Possibilities enable the analysis and generation of nuance, something required for faithful translation. Furthermore, the representation of the meaning of words is crucial,...
متن کاملFrom Bilingual Dictionaries to Interlingual Document Representations
Mapping documents into an interlingual representation can help bridge the language barrier of a cross-lingual corpus. Previous approaches use aligned documents as training data to learn an interlingual representation, making them sensitive to the domain of the training data. In this paper, we learn an interlingual representation in an unsupervised manner using only a bilingual dictionary. We fi...
متن کاملAmbiguous Noun Phrases in Logical Form
In this paper, logical form representations for pronouns, singular definite noun phrases (NPs), and singular indefinite NPs are developed. These representations allow decisions about the precise meaning of a sentence to be postponed until the required information becomes available. Three computational constraints for this logical form are proposed: compactness, modularity, and formal consistenc...
متن کاملRegularized Interlingual Projections: Evaluation on Multilingual Transliteration
In this paper, we address the problem of building a multilingual transliteration system using an interlingual representation. Our approach uses international phonetic alphabet (IPA) to learn the interlingual representation and thus allows us to use any word and its IPA representation as a training example. Thus, our approach requires only monolingual resources: a phoneme dictionary that lists w...
متن کاملThe Average American has 2.3 Children
Average-NPs, such as the one in the title of this paper, have been claimed to be 'linguistically identical' to any other definite-NPs but at the same time to be 'semantically inconsistent' with these other definite-NPs. To some this is an ironclad proof of the irrelevance of semantics to linguistics. We argue that both of the initial claims are wrong: average-NPs are not 'linguistically identic...
